Problem

Covid-19 has forced runners to rethink how they want to connect and meet through fitness. Pre-pandemic, runners could meet up at a certain location to run or attend running events such as Nike’s running events. Post pandemic, meeting up for running events is a gamble when Omicron cases are rising and Nike Running events are canceled until further notice. Even though Nike Run Club has a way to connect with friends virtually to do running challenges with, you are only limited to the people in your contact list. There might be people who want to connect with other runners virtually around the world or locally.

Background

There’s no denying that Covid-19 has changed the way we live, and as we go through each alphabet order of a mutation (we are already at “O” for omicron). It looks like Covid isn’t going away any time soon. This has forced runners who use Nike Run Club to train on their own, but what about NRC runners who want to connect with other local or virtual runners? Currently, Nike has a constraint where you can only connect with people in your contact list, I want to explore the possibility of users connecting beyond their contact list.

Research Goal

We want to know whether or not Nike Run Club runners would be interested in a feature where you can connect with other runners beyond their personal contact list. We also want to understand how runners use their fitness applications, this will help with the features that would encourage NRC runners to use this feature on a daily basis.
