What are 1:1s

A 1:1 is a regular check-in between 2 people. In this guide, we focus on 1:1s between a manager and their report.

The focus is on creating a safe and consistent space for giving feedback, keeping each other in the loop, resolving issues, helping the people grow in their roles and bringing up whatever is happening for someone that they might not feel comfortable sharing at large.

Why are 1:1s important

1:1s are where you can keep people excited, engaged and focussed on company goals. Frequent 1:1s result in higher retention. (re:Work)

• Continuous feedback so you always know where you stand + chance to correct course when needed before it becomes a problem.
• Space to bring up things that are difficult to bring up during busy work days.

Benefits for managers

• Guide team member's development, resolve issues early (or even tackle them before they become issues) and thereby improve engagement and employee retention.
• Time to build real connections, trust and psychological safety.
• Space to get upward feedback to help you become a better manager and to address issues in the company.

Frequency & Length

This depends on the person, their seniority, their goals, how often you work together on a daily basis, the amount of reports and many more factors.

• Somewhere between weekly to monthly, with monthly as the absolute minimum. During onboarding, we recommend weekly 1:1s.
• At least 30 minutes, up to 1 hour.
